Title: Interpreters are Related Service Providers but What Does That Mean?

Description: According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004), interpreters supporting deaf students are Related Service Providers, in the same category as audiologists and speech professionals (IDEA, Section 300.34). And while it's now more widely understood that educational interpreters are professional providers, what does that really mean? Using a co-creation framework, the presenter will guide participants through activities to untangle our responsibilities as Related Service Providers. How do we document student use of services and participate in IEP meetings? This session will allow us to collaboratively share our expertise so we can be more proactive IEP team members.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to describe strategies for documenting data that describes deaf students’ use of interpreting services.
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to advocate as professional Related Service Providers to be included as participating members of the IEP team.

Target Audience: Educational interpreters, special education directors, deaf education administrators and staff.

This workshop will be presented in spokenEnglish. Captions and ASL interpretation will be provided during the presentation; however, no captions or interpretation will be provided during activities in breakout rooms. All participants will be asked to use ASL in the activity breakout rooms. EIPA Workshops are designed for skilled interpreters able to fully participate in ASL conversations.

A Certificate of Completion (4 contact hours) and/or RID CEUs (.4 CEUs) will be awarded, if requested, to participants who complete the following requirements:

Submit a post-workshop survey within 72 hours of the live event.
Correctly record and submit the 2 validation codes that are provided during the workshop. *These validation codes verify attendance throughout the entire workshop. Validation codes are submitted on the post-workshop survey.
The validation codes are designed to meet EIPA and RID’s requirement to “…verify participant attendance and completion of all course materials and requirements…”

Whitney Renee Weirick, PhD (she/her) is a certified interpreter, parent and newlywed! Dr. Weirick (“WHY-Rick”) is focused on advancing educational equity for k-12 deaf and hard of hearing students through critical examinations of how educational leadership and policy interact to help or hinder the professionalization of ASL interpreting in schools.
