Title: Deaf Interpreters in K-12 and Administrator Perspectives on Deaf Learners

Description: Deaf interpreters work in collaboration with hearing interpreters side by side to navigate the unique intricacies of language and cultural mediation by expanding their role-space and decision latitude to ensure that linguistic equity is achieved. DIs work with a wide variety of students and are often overlooked as a resource in K-12 settings. With the demands that exist in the educational setting, this presentation examines research on the roles, responsibilities, and benefits of Deaf Interpreter-Hearing Interpreter (DI-HI) teams, research as to why this occurs and some strategies for approaching such resistance will be provided.

Educational Outcomes: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…

  1. Identify three roles and positions taken on by Deaf interpreters in K-12 settings

  2. Specify three benefits of having Deaf Interpreter-Hearing Interpreter (DI-HI) teams in K-12 settings

  3. Describe three reasons and responses to administrators’ reluctance to DIs in K12 settings
